Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

The focus of the grant program that I coordinate in our school district is to have a strong emphasis on STEM activities....Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Today we took all the 8th grade students at Kellogg Middle School and took them to the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River to do some hands-on STEM lessons.  They are working with the Idah2o Master Stewards who capture readings from different water sources in Idaho, and post the results to the website.

Students were put in groups, and went to various stations, including checking the water for Dissolved Oxygen, Transparency, pH levels, Stream Depth, Water Temperature and Stream Velocity.  They also did a Wolman Pebble Count.  This information will be shared with the Idah2o Master Stewards website through the University of Idaho to help monitor this part of the Coeur d'Alene River.  This is also a Community Service project through the Gear Up program, a project that students can use to help the community while doing a hands-on Science lesson using our areas own natural resources.

Here are some photographs from our time this afternoon.
